This
is the
Negev Desert, the vast
dry wasteland that covers more than half of Israel.
It
is one of the harshest places on the planet.
Around 1 inch of rain a year, daytime heat near 35
degrees Celsius, and nights so cold the temperature
drops close to 0.
Out
on this cracked, empty ground, survival is brutal, even
for humans.
So
when Israel trucked millions of fish out into this
desert, dropped them into open ponds, and left them
there for months, it sounded completely insane.
Then
they came back, and what was waiting in the water
changed how this entire country feeds itself.
I'm
Ambrose Wild, and this is one of the strangest
engineering stories on the planet, because almost
everything your instincts tell you about this place is
about to get turned upside down.
Out
here in the sand and rock of the Negev, Israel is
quietly raising fish, shrimp, and seaweed by the
thousands of tons.
And
by the end of this, I'll show you the single most
valuable thing they grow in this desert, a glowing red
substance that is worth more by weight than almost
anything on your plate, and the strange reason it can
only be made out here.
But
to understand how any of it is possible, you have to
start with a number that makes no sense... |
