EPÍLOGO - ¿Y AHORA QUÉ?

Sólo los más reaccionarios entre los católicos se resisten a admi tir que los veintisiete años de pontificado de Juan Pablo II significaron un serio retroceso en el proceso de modernización que la Iglesia emprendió tras el II Concilio Vaticano. Ello ha tenido como consecuencia un progresivo divorcio de la Iglesia con la so ciedad, traducido en síntomas como la crisis de vocaciones que ha llenado nuestras iglesias, en especial las rurales, de sacerdotes latinoamericanos que tienen que atender varias parroquias a la vez. Los sectores más conservadores, encarnados en el Opus Dei, detentan el poder hasta el punto de haber apartado a los más renovadores y haber dejado a la Iglesia indisolublemente vinculada a las posturas de los partidos de derecha de los diferentes países.

La elección como Papa del cardenal alemán Joseph Ratzinger no supone sino la perpetuación de esta situación y constituye una pésima noticia para los católicos progresistas. Es curioso porque en su juventud Ratzinger fue un sacerdote progresista y uno de los inspiradores del II Concilio Vaticano. Sin embargo, la edad y el hacerse cargo de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe fueron apaciguando sus ansias renovadoras y le convirtieron en uno de los abanderados de la corriente más conservadora del Vaticano. Juan Pablo II lo tenía como uno de sus principales asesores y muchos creen que le fue allanando el camino para que se convirtiera en su sucesor, integrando en el colegio cardenalicio a decenas de obispos conservadores, muchos de ellos a sugerencia del propio Ratzinger.

Al nuevo Papa le conoceremos por sus obras. Desde su puesto en la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe, Ratzinger sancionó a los teólogos de la teología de la liberación latinoamericana, denunció la homosexualidad y los matrimonios gays y censuró públicamente a los sacerdotes asiáticos que veían las religiones no cristianas como parte del «plan de Dios para la humanidad». Durante aquel período, Ratzinger se convirtió en un verdadero «martillo de herejes» y llegó a calificar de «inmaduros» a los sectores más aperturistas, así como de «deficientes» a las iglesias protestantes.

El pasado 6 de junio de 2005, durante una alocución pronunciada en la basílica de San Juan de Letrán, dejó claro que sus opiniones no se habían dulcificado un ápice:

Las varias formas de disolución del matrimonio que existen hoy, como las uniones libres, las experiencias prematrimoniales y hasta los seudomatrimonios de gente del mismo sexo, son expresiones de una libertad anárquica que es erróneamente confundida con la verdadera libertad del hombre [...] llegados a este punto se muestra cada vez más claro cómo de contrario es al amor humano, a la vocación profunda del hombre y de la mujer, cerrar sistemáticamente su unión al regalo de la vida.

En cualquier caso, aún no ha pasado el tiempo suficiente como para juzgar el pontificado de Benedicto XVI, y mucho menos aún en el aspecto que hemos tratado en este libro, el del gobierno interno del Vaticano. De todos modos, por el bien de la Iglesia, ojalá que no haya que añadir ningún capítulo más en una futura edición.
