THE PYRAMIDS OF PARATOARI

In 1976 this satellite image of an extremely inaccessible part of the transitional altitude jungle in southeastern Peru generated considerable interest because of the appearance of eight large pyramids in two symmetrical rows.

This area, approximately 70 miles northeast of Ollantaytambo, is known as Paratoari and also known as Paititi and as Muribecca.

In 1996, Gregory Deyermenjian led an expedition northeast from Cuzco to investigate the pyramids of Partoari. He followed ancient stone paved roads, and found a number of Incan and Pre-Incan artifacts, including petroglyphs and stone buildings.

Paulino Mamani, a member of the expedition, viewed the area from a platform atop one of the pyramids.

Paulino Mamani stood on a bald spot on one of the pyramids.
